12-16 May 2025 São Paulo (Brazil)

Venue

The event will be organized by the University of São Paulo (USP) in collaboration with the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE). USP is the best-ranked university in Latin America and INPE is the institution responsible for providing the numerical weather, climate and environmental forecasts for Brazil, and leads the effort of developing the future Brazilian Earth System Model, the Model for Ocean-laNd-Atmosphere predictioN (MONAN) initiative.

The workshop will be held at the University of São Paulo, São Paulo city campus, at the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (IME-USP) and will include a short visit to INPE's facilities.

Main Venue: Universidade de São Paulo - São Paulo city campus

Instituto de Matemática e Estatística
Departamento de Matemática Aplicada
Rua do Matão, 1010
Cidade Universitária, CEP 05508-090
São Paulo SP, Brazil

The workshop will take place at the auditorium of the institute, which can accommodate around 80 people, or, if required, larger auditoriums at the university can be requested.  The auditorium is prepared for online, live or hybrid events if needed.

The Mathematics Institute has a cafeteria for quick snacks, and lunch is served in restaurants in nearby institutes, such as the Economics Institute (picture below).

Further information on the venue

The University of São Paulo (USP) is the largest institution dedicated to higher education and research in Brazil. Founded in 1934, USP is a public university, with approximately 90,000 students, 12,000 administrative and support staff, 5,300 professors and 8 campuses located in the State of São Paulo.

USP offers undergraduate courses in all fields of knowledge and graduate programs in the Exact, Human and Biological Sciences. USP has Institutes and Schools in all fields of knowledge, hospitals, physical and digital libraries and centers and institutes specialized in advanced research, which complete the scientific development promoted by the University. USP`s museums are open for public visitation and offer artistic, historical and scientific exhibits. USP has many events and locations specially designed to accommodate its cultural and sport activities. More at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_S%C3%A3o_Paulo

The Institute of Mathematics and Statistics was officially created on January, 15th, 1970, through the University Reform which brought together in a single unit professors of mathematics, statistics and computer science from several other Institutions of the University. In 1993, the four departments, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics and the courses offered were formalized. Research at IME-USP is based on disciplinary and interdisciplinary excellence, which is why it has become an excellent environment for study and scientific research. It has undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics and computer science.

Brazil has a good tradition of fundamental and applied research in numerical weather and climate model development, with frequent collaborations with leading weather research centres and academic institutes. The Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE), the institution responsible for providing numerical weather, climate and environmental forecasts for Brazil, leads major efforts to develop new weather, climate, and environmental models targeting Brazilian and South American needs. Recently, in collaboration with many institutes and universities in Brazil, INPE proposed a project to develop a unified community-based model of the Earth system - the Model for Ocean-laNd-Atmosphere predictioN (MONAN). MONAN is focused on a new paradigm for advancing the Earth system numerical prediction in Brazil and Latin America. It aims to produce the best weather, climate, and environmental forecasting available worldwide for the South American region and adjacent oceans, replacing the current atmospheric models INPE applies nowadays. In its early stages, it integrates knowledge from researchers from all over Brazil and has been working on collaborations and agreements with NCAR, NOAA, NASA and ECMWF, and is open for further collaborations.

With MONAN in sight, we consider that hosting PDEs on the Sphere workshop in Brazil in 2025 can be a good opportunity for a two-fold interaction: present and discuss the main plans and developments of MONAN; and welcome PDEs on the Sphere researchers to present their research and engage in potential collaborations.
